S.M.A.R.T. Fire Fighting and Prevention
Fire Responder Training
To ensure a shift in focus from the presentation
of didactic information to the acquisition of dynamic skills,
new instructional techniques have been introduced in this course.
The course has been developed on the principle that the fire responder
could learn through repetitive hands-on practice opportunities
to perform reflex-action skills. Training in this course uses
a variety of techniques to help participants achieve this comfort
with skills performance. The new instructional techniques are:
- Our inter-active Power-Point presentation consists of accurate material to ensure uniformity and standardisation of educational and training content from course-to-course and instructor-to-instructor
- A low instructor-participant ratio (Max 1:15) ensures effective and efficient participant skills acquisition. This low ratio is designed to ensure that participants have maximal hands-on skills practice time throughout the course
The course targets all lay responders, such as employees in the workplace, security personnel and other laypersons. These responders are trained in the use of hand-held fire fighting appliances and fixed installation fire hose reels.
The course involves multiple learning activities:
- Power-point slide presentation
- Videotaped overviews and examples of various topics
- Videotaped skills demonstrations
- Instructor-led scenario-based practice sessions
- Formal knowledge and skills evaluation
This course is designed for lay rescuers who are required to
obtain a course certificate documenting completion of a Basic
Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Course.
